MIDI camera connection kit

Is the camera connection kit enough to synch an iPad (last generation) and a cable or the iConnect interface is a mandatory item in the equation? (pricey and hard to find on online shops). I tried before to do a direct connection but nothing happened. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
