Hi from London...problem with AirPlay

Hi,
I am a frustrated Logic Pro X user and an enthusiastic iPad/Korg Gadget user who has just decided to switch from Logic to Ableton. I heard how great Lemur is as an Ableton controller and want to get started. However, I have failed to even connect the iPad and MacBook using AirPlay. I am on a shared wifi network (password protected). I cannot create a working lemur network and don't understand why. Do I need to use Apple TV or should the MacBook Pro be able to connect over AirPlay without one? Thanks for any tips or insights.
