nChord v3 - HeartEater: Released

Post by Avantgarde Sound » 29 Sep 2014 21:58

Cheers all
Just to let you guys know that I just released nChord v3 - HeartEater.

I also wanted to make myself available via this forum for your questions if any, or you guys can just shoot me an email (at the website (http://www.avantgardesound.com)).
The next post is more or less a copy of the info that was sent to current nChord v1 users. Maybe you guys can take a look and let me know of any questions.

For reference, my first account was "Avantgarde Audio" and the v1 introduction is in this thread:
https://forum.liine.net/viewtopic.php?f ... ord#p12065

Still very grateful to all Lemurites who have actively supported the project during this two years, since v1. You know who you are. Thanks so much.

Hey all :D

nChord v3 - HeartEater IS OUT!

Very proud to celebrate with my Lemurites and all prestigious variants the first 2 years of
Avantgarde Sound*
*for the love of the machine

. Now with celebration mode ON, I am happy to announce the release and immediate availability of my shiny new:
nChord v3 - HeartEater
the modular harmony super algorithm
- a MIDI control super instrument

All the info here> http://www.avantgardesound.com/

Q: What do you mean “v3”? I never saw a v2!
R: I know, right? : ) It is v3 based on a beta-test adamant request stating “make it v3 already PLEASE, it is THAT f’ing good!!” So be it.

Q: What happened to the e in enChord?
R: A huge mean dog ate it, enChord is now nChord, and v3 - HeartEater is its current, shiny new incarnation!

WHAT'S NEW IN nChord v3 - HeartEater
. To prevent overflowing this post with info (blatant fail alert! :) as nChord v3 - HeartEater has dozens of new features and improvements, here’s just a taste of what’s new in v3:

. [new!] External MIDI Controller Support
your external MIDI device can now control nChord MIDI instruments while they in-harmonically control external sound generators = TURN YOUR 3rd PARTY MIDI DEVICE INTO AN IN-HARMONIC MIDI CONTROLLER NOW!!!
Yup,
  • 1) simply connect your MIDI note device (pedal board, keyboard controller, drum pad controller, MIDI guitar, etc.) to nChord’s MIDI input (via a direct hardware connection is encouraged for improved ultralow latency performance!)
    2) Tap the MIDI Learn button function in nChord, and strike the left-most (lowest) key on your controller
    3) Connect nChord’s MIDI output to any sound generator MIDI port.
Those 3 (set-and-forget) basic steps will turn your 3rd party generic controller into the most advanced harmonic MIDI controller in the world. Your generic MIDI notes will turn into harmonic bliss by putting nChord v3 right in the middle of the hottest threesome ever! :) You can then trigger any ChordBank chords AND/OR nChord PadBoard’s in-harmonic scale player! YESSSSS!!! You are welcome!!

. [new!] FULL Save and Recall
finally!, all ChordBank settings and your factory or crafted custom chords can be saved and recalled! You are welcome!!

. [new!] Dedicated Chord Velocity Mixer for ChordBank
With velocity master and interpolation controls! You are welcome!!

. [new!] NoteBoard Sense
create/input custom chords in REALTIME via MIDI into NoteBoard and save them with the new HotChord function into ChordBank for your performance pleasure via ChordBank itself or via your external MIDI controller! You are welcome!!

. And DOZENS of new features and improvements…
Additional info on our updated website. Check it out now!: http://www.avantgardesound.com

v1 LICENSED USERS UPGRADE DISCOUNT INFORMATION
. Early v1 supporters were indeed able to acquire their license for less than half the regular donation amount. I still am grateful to v1 users, so you will be able to get a v3 license for 50% off the regular price. Send us an email from your Registered Email Address AND your Proof of v1 Purchase to receive your discounted path.

. Also, users who purchased a v1 license after August 29th 2014 will indeed receive a v3 license free of charge, shoot me an email with your proof of purchase and I will sort you out.

#1:
A QUICK TUTORIAL ON THE NEW EXTERNAL MIDI CHORD TRIGGERING FEATURE IN nChord v3 - HeartEater:

Scenario:
- User has stored some chords in ChordBank and now wants to trigger these chords from his external MIDI device.

This is how to do exactly that:

Once you connected your 3rd party device controller MIDI output to your class compliant interface MIDI input in iPad.
1. In nChord, tap Functions, then tap MIDI Learn

2. Strike the utmost left key in your kb.
(nChord will detect the key and replace the 0 right next to the "MIDI Learn" label. The MIDI Learn button will be automatically disengaged.)

You are all set. Any of the 12 left-most incoming notes will control ChordBank and trigger its stored chords.

TIP: For best performance and a nice real time triggering feel, a class compliant HW MIDI device is strongly recommended as the MIDI input connection.

#2:
A QUICK TUTORIAL ON THE NEW EXTERNAL SCALE TRIGGERING FEATURE IN nChord v3 - HeartEater
(PadBoard, the internal controller could already do this since v1; but with v3, you can control PadBoard's 4 octaves too from an external MIDI device):

Scenario:
- User wants to perform in-harmonically (in-scale) using his external MIDI controller.

This is how:
- Once you followed the above MIDI Learn tutorial's 2 simple steps>
1. Do nothing, but tap on Functions/PadBoard MIDI. nChord will already have automatically mapped the remaining keys (the subsequent keys following ChordBank's 12 memory slots/triggers) of your external controller for you to control any currently-selected scale's 4 octaves using PadBoard.

You can call up PadBoard (Functions/PadBoard) and see how its pads light up upon external triggering.

TIP: You can increase/decrease PadBoards note output by octave> Goto Functions, then tap on + or - (next to the PadBoard button).

#3:
A QUICK TUTORIAL ON THE NEW NOTEBOARD SENSE FEATURE[/color] IN nChord v3 - HeartEater:

Scenario:
- User wants to
a) input chords "live" for further editing and/or for storage in nChord's ChordBank.
b) explore in-harmonic (in-scale) voicings "as he plays" his 3rd party MIDI device OR the included PadBoard multi-touch instrument, seeking new chord "live" creation.

Very proud to say the following hyper-fast method is a world's first EVER.
This is how to do exactly that:

Once you followed the 2 steps in the #1 MIDI Learn Tutorial above:
1. Tap Functions/then tap on NoteBoard Sense
- "PadBoard MIDI" will turn on
- The HotChord button will appear (top right of the screen)

2. You can start playing PadBoard via your 3rd party controller or directly on screen via PadBoard's multi-touch interface.
- As you play in-harmonically (in-scale), EVERY note you play will be displayed on and off (as played) automatically in NoteBoard in a blue color.
- However, EVERY TIME you hit a triad (any three notes -a chord) or a tetrachord or a pentachord, etc., this will be automatically detected by nChord, and highlighted in NoteBoard in a different color.
- Then you can:

A) Tap the HotChord button
- The displayed notes will change color to indicate they are ready to

a) be auditioned again with the NoteBoard Test Selection pad or
b) be further edited using nChord's custom chord modifiers or
c) be further edited manually using NoteBoard's touch paint surface
d) be saved in ChordBank as your custom chord

B) Tap the HotChord button again to cancel any of the above routines.
- NoteBoard sense will remain on for you to keep exploring custom chord creation in-harmonically.

TIP: Our beloved PadBoard instrument in nChord v3 - HeartEater also includes expresion, aftertouch, pitchbend, and sostenuto thru support. Goto Functions and tap on the corresponding switches to enable!

Posts deleted for personal attacks and going off topic.

I see absolutely incredible work being posted on this forum. The work produced in the past years has blown us away, whether it's been small modules shared here, templates posted in the User Library or commercial templates sold by 3rd parties. You've all taken Lemur far, far beyond what we imagined was possible with this humble tool.

We all have different views on life, the universe and everything. It's entirely up to every Lemur user to decide what they wish to do with their own work. Let's all try to just take a deep breath. Let's stay on topic, and keep the forum a polite and respectful place.

Thank you.

Nicolas

Thanks Nicolas.

To Oldgearguy:

Hey man, I saw your post, and I just want to say that I meant to answer some of your questions about nChord but now I see that your entire post was deleted too in the "thread cleansing process" . I didn't manage to read your entire post but... I will address a couple of points you stated (which I don't see any reason to censor or moderate):

First, you made a very good point, at least as I remember it, about the functional needs/requirement differences between a) a quick shareable template for further development, ie., a module or a small project (an always welcome thing to do!), and b) a fully featured app that intends to help its currrent and further development via a fixed donation or a similar method.

My man, I do agree completely with what you said! A big part of my effort beyond the conceptual portion of nChord (I had everything working in my head for years before I decided to go ahead with the coding) went into making it a fully end-user-friendly work environment. You couldn't be more right about the additional work this aspect entails. Trying to make everything transparent to the end user is definitely important to me. I think if you take a look at the quick tutorials above, you could pretty much take those as examples of what is like to work with nChord: yes, there is a heavy conceptual load (and thousands of lines of code) hiding behind the functions BUT the user actions unleashing the concepts in a functional way only require 1 tap of your finger or 2 at most basically for everything. This aspect takes forever but it's well worth it. There's still progress to be made, as usual though. It never freaking ends!!!

I think I have the considerable advantage/disadvantage that I was and have been an electronic musician first intead of a developer. Throughout the years, I learned a lot about computer-assisted workflow and ergonomics within the music production side. I tried all forms and sorts of controllers in my studio, from exotic tech gadgets to basic devices and even 3 hw legacy Lemurs at one time, including everything in between. A defect I have that I use as a tool: I am incredibly demanding about functional working conditions and environment, sort of a neat freak too, so my best bet throughout the development process consisted of truly becoming a ferocious critic of my own work. To sum it up, I would give myself massive headaches with constant drilling like: "yeah, very fast, neat and cool, but... it could be faster". I certainly made myself code/delete/re-design/re-code related software routines countless times before I was "at ease", and until the whole thing was seemingly ice-cream-easy from a user perspective to perform the sw routines. But again, this is my motto and my philosophy: "Everything is perfectible... Permanently."

I am definitely glad to find sort of a soulmate (at least re this aspect) within the fellow lemur environment devs. Cheers to that.

I also remember you commented something on my nChord presentation style. Man, man, man, I couldn't agree more. I freaking suck at it. As a matter of fact, I literally detest this aspect of the work. If it was up to me, I would be CREATING tech concepts 24 hours a day, instead of having to spend a single second trying to make the presentations "likeable" for everyone. Some people expect flashy videos with bullshitwood fx saying absolutely nothing but hype. Other people expect just a list of dead-cold product specs. As another example, at the beginning, people said, "how come you are just acting like a punk and selling nChord through a flea market like eBay; nChord deserves better, do a website!, ANY freaking website!". Done. Then "I hate your website". :o Hahaha. :) It never ends, but hey, you have no choice but to take the heat and try to keep pleasing as much people as you can because I truly think people make good points more often than not. There's something to learn all the time. Fact is, however, you end up using even more time on this boring aspect of the whole thing, rather than improving ideas and developing the tons of them already bursting in your head! You need to balance and hope for the best. Man, I wish I could hire a VERY NICE secretary to make my life easier (in every aspect) :). I will keep working on this though, because it is an important aspect of such a project, no matter what.

I know you made a longer post, but I would not want to misquote you. Let's converse if you like. Let's just keep it nice so we can keep moderato's wrath in parking mode!! :D

Thanks for the reasoned response. It took me a chunk of time to type and edit it before I posted it so I'm glad you saw some of it before the purge...

Nick explained that even though it wasn't an attack, it was still off-topic, so I'll PM you and we can continue this that way.
